WarrenWelcome to JDHR, the podcast by two HR professionals who want to help you get through to workday by saying all the things you're thinking, but say them out loud. I'm Warren. This is Feathers. And it's time for another shorty episode.
FeathersYeah, we gotta work on that name.
WarrenWell, we we gotta do something quick, is it's sort of like a dog, I think. If you after it learns its name, you can't change the dog's name. That's just mental torture for the dog. So if we do it, we gotta do do quick, and we're definitely not new dogs, young dogs. No. So yeah, we if we're gonna do a change, we're gonna have to do something quickly. But Gwynn, that's almost a segue, I guess you could say, to what I want to talk about today. I was inspired for this episode by first I saw Lars Schmidt on LinkedIn, and he has a podcast as well, talking about this to a certain degree, and then the folks on HR Famous, the team over there, were discussing it on their last episode. And now I wanted to put a little bit different spin on it, but to me, I think 2022, looking back, was the HR hashtag year. And I came up with a total of seven HR hashtags that that popped up over the course of 2022 and gave you a little bit of a homework assignment to think of anything that you might have had come up with as well. But I was trying to go in some chronological order, but I don't work that way. I'm I'm very random and all over the place. But yeah, well, I'll talk about that later. So the first one, can you guess what the first one was?
FeathersNo. Uh because I'm like the most anti, not anti, that's not the right choice words. I'm like, I'm an idiot. I mean, I didn't know what an influencer was, so do you think I'd like to follow hashtags?
WarrenOh, well, before I get too deep into this, the the ladies at Baked HR put out an awesome post the other day about you can't be 25 years old and call yourself an HR influencer and I just died laughing. I think that was Jasmine's post, but it was it was funny. I very much appreciated that overall. So yeah. No influencers.
FeathersHashtag respect.
WarrenExactly. So let me let me get back on to to topic to keep this into hopefully the shorty realm. Anyways, the first hashtag I came up with uh that happened in 2022 was the great resignation. You know, how many times did we have to hear about the great resignation? And I was over it very quickly. And it seems like with starting with that great resignation hashtag, everybody wanted to get their own hash HR hashtags trending. And uh, so I I ne I wasn't directly impacted by the great resignation. I don't think that I I don't know any HR people said, yeah, we lost a huge percentage of our employee base because of this great resignation. We didn't lose any more or less than we do any other particular time. How about you?
FeathersI would say the industry that I work in I think everybody just kind of hopped around. I think I mean we saw attrition a little bit higher than probably a normal year in one particular department, but then again, we were recruiting, we were getting people from other companies doing the exact same job that people were losing, we were leaving us for. So I mean it was it was a probably a wash.
WarrenWell, yeah. So no no massive effect. I've I haven't met anybody who just said, yeah, we were decimated by the great resignation. And it makes me think if you were completely decimated, you'd probably have some bigger problems going on underneath. Culture. Hashtag culture. Yeah, that's perfect.
FeathersWell the follow-up to I'm just gonna start yelling at a hashtag something natural.
WarrenHey, that's awesome. I love it. Well, the follow-up to the great resignation, and it I've seen it two different ways, either the great comeback or the great regret, where people wanted to come back. The grass wasn't greener. But you didn't say it right.
FeathersIt's hashtag the great comeback or hashtag reg hashtag regrets. Regirts. No regurts. Hashtag regerts. I had regrets. Hashtag bring me back. Hashtag bring me back. But and uh, you know, hashtag boomerang employees.
WarrenBoomerang. We did have one employee who left us for greener pastures which weren't so green and came back to us rather quickly. So there was my there was my homework.
FeathersThat was my one. I contributed. Hashtag boomerang employees.
WarrenHashtag boomerangs. We we got 'em. But yeah, uh so that was the next thing. But once again, we had one person who left us and did come back, but I don't think it was I don't think for our company, if if you didn't have the great resignation, you didn't have the great comeback or the great regret. And then then we get into some of our favorite ones that are going around hashtag quite quitting. Ooh, that you know, and there's as many definitions of quite quitting out there as this is just setting boundaries. This is just no, and then you got people, no, these are slack motherfuckers who are just you know stealing company time, etc.
FeathersSo there's I like there's I like how that became like a formal term. I mean, I've been in the working world for god 25 plus years, and I'm like, I've known asshole, I've known assholes been doing that since the first day I stepped into a job. Like even even working at the video store when I was a teenager, like people did the the least amount. So I like how this is a fancy term now. Bullshit, this has been going on forever. No, it but to these hashtag quiet quitting my ass.
WarrenBut to these zoomers and stuff, this is the first time they're they're experiencing it, so it's new to them. So, anyways, yeah. Next one is quiet firing. We we heard that a few months ago. I think we we did an episode talking about quiet firing, you know, you put them on performance improvement plans and things like that, and you're trying to manage them out. And I'm like, Yep, that's been going on forever, too.
FeathersI would refer I would I would change that to hashtag coach up or coach out. I couldn't agree more. Hashtag manage out. Yeah. I had some friends in my life, hashtag manage out.
WarrenHashtag pip. But once again, nothing new, nothing great, nothing earth shattering. And then the last two that I had really were quiet hiring. We we saw that where you you start putting on additional responsibilities onto the staff that you do have.
FeathersAnd correctly, Warren. Hashtag quiet hiring. You gotta Oh, I didn't say that. You gotta add the had the hashtag. I mean, no the lingo, bro. No, no the lingo, bro. Come on. No, that was the last shorty we were. If you're gonna have an episode about hashtags, if you're gonna have a hashtag episode, throw some hashtags in there.
WarrenOkay. Hashtag quiet hiring. There you go. When you're when you're talking about giving people additional work responsibilities because you don't have much stuff to cover what you do have. And I'm like, nothing new there. And I think it goes along with the quiet quitting. I don't want to do more, you know, type thing. And versus, hey, let's uh I don't want to bite the hand that's feeding me. I I I don't know. Just never got into that. And then related to quiet hiring, uh, when I saw most recently, quiet promotions making hashtag quiet quiet promotions. Yeah, I'm more boomer than I am, Xer, I guess.
FeathersSoomer.
WarrenYeah.
FeathersBut uh that's gonna be the next intro. Two HR professionals, hashtag Warren's a boomer, and this is feathers.
WarrenYou're only one year behind me, dude. I'm cooler. Yeah, well, that's not that's a very low bar to I I like to tell people in high school I was on the the varsity football team, and I had this friend that you know he was trying to show off running girls. Yeah, I was on the I said something like, yeah, I was on the football team too, and he he said, Well, I played a million times more than you. I said, Well, a million times zero is still zero. I had one my junior year, I had zero playing minutes. I think my senior year I had three playing minutes. Feel time. So, yeah, anyways, yeah, it uh I forget where I was going with that, but anyways, still warrants of boomer. All right, and then the last hashtag I couldn't resist not including it is hashtag HRDivas. So if you need to check out our HR Diva episode with once again the ladies from BakedHR, it was a riot. So excuse me. It was a riot, so check it out. It was a lot of fun. That was probably one of the most fun episodes to do in a long time. And if you watch on their video, you can see me my awesome sparkly pink bow on the baked HR YouTube channel.
FeathersSo hashtag frightening.
WarrenVery frightening. Yes, very, very frightening. But where I wanted to go with all these dumbass hashtags is that's that's where HR is heading. And I'm afraid for the future of HR because everybody wants to have this next coolest hashtag, and it's it's management by Facebook group, is what it is. And what can I do to be cool and get trendy and get go viral in my HR world and and things like that? No, it's called hashtag do your fucking job. I was gonna say some other things, but so I'm looking at edited myself.
FeathersI'm looking at I don't even know what I Googled, but I've got the best HR hashtags for Instagram. And some of these are quite hilarious. There's Oh, let's hear them. Hashtag SavageHr. That's HR problems. Okay. Hashtag HR positive. I like this one a lot. Hashtag HR without bullshit.
WarrenOoh. I want to make that my hashtag on our Instagram posts.
FeathersWe know the person behind this one, but hashtag not sherm approved. Yep, yep, not sherm approved. Okay. And then last but not least, this is for you. Hashtag HRlovesy. HR loves you.
WarrenAw. And you know, when you I think of these HR people who are doing these stupid hashtags and stuff. I think of the person who wants to be the party planning committee, and I think of this like middle-aged woman wearing this ugly sweater and wants to do, you know, like a kindergarten teacher almost. And uh keeps coming. Oh, now we've got hashtag open enrollment, yeah, you know, or whatever to get their their people going. So anyways, I I'm I'm sick of the all the HR hashtags as I think all of them, except for maybe HRD, but are completely bullshit.
FeathersThere's still I'll always like hashtag not Sherman approved.
WarrenYes, that's very much that's very much a thing. So we want to get Jan back on sometime, so we I I hope we get to can make that happen. So, anyways, that's all I had for this shorty episode, which we will continue to work on renaming. Please send us your comments of what you think we should re-rename it to.
FeathersI'm trying to recommend hashtag warrants a boomer shorty.
WarrenThat can be its whole own episode. How I get those kids off my yard. What gets your wife as a guest star? Oh, I've tried too many times and she she rejects me flat out. She's she will not come. I even talked to her tonight. One day I need to have you on now. No.
FeathersSo I mean she's payroll, so she's hash hashtag payroll.
WarrenHashtag payroll. And she's got some awesome stories. Some of that if I think that's the problem, she's got some too awesome stories she doesn't want to get out there as well. So I don't know. I will keep her confidentiality on her wonderful, awesome stories. Well, getting back to HR, we will have a very special guest, our first episode in February. So please listen. It's gonna be fun, it's gonna be exciting. I'm really looking forward to it. So as always, I'm Warren. Hashtag Warren's Boomer. This is Feathers. And we're helping you survive HR hashtag one what the fuck moment at a time.
